Must-Read Books with Both Sapphics and Dragons

Note: This post was rewritten on 9/15/19.

Books that have dragons are epic. Books that have sapphics are amazing.

Books that have both are powerful – and not as uncommon as one might think.

On this list, books with queer women and awe-inducing dragons have been gathered for your reading pleasure. So scroll on forth and find your next favorite read.

Tale of a Dragon Princess by Lizzie Colt

Tale of a Dragon Princess follows a – you guessed it! – princess who has been cursed to turn into a dragon every night. As far as curses go, this one seems like an exciting one to have, but Princess Mellie is over it. So when Mellie hears of a way she can break her curse, she, along with a bodyguard, goes on a journey to find it. But along the way, the princess starts realizing that she may have feelings for her bodyguard…

Not only does the book have lesbian and bisexual rep, but it has disability rep as well. Specifically, the character has prosthetic fingers. Why you’re reading this post instead of reading this book right now, one will never know.

In the Vanishers’ Palace by Aliette de Bodard

It’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling with an f/f romance.

If that doesn’t capture your attention immediately, then who knows what else will? That Aliette de Bodard is a Hugo-nominated author? That this book also has Vietnamese rep and Vietnamese culture weaved throughout? Or, maybe that there’s a woman who can turn into a dragon in it?

All you really need to know though is that this is required reading. Many have gushed about the romance and the characters, and many more will.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

The Priory of the Orange Tree is a personal favorite. It’s one of those books that when you read the last page, you immediately flip back to the first one so you can experience it all over again. Once you start reading it, you get enveloped into the world Shannon created and it’s vibrant with personalities and stories and characters that you just can’t help but love it. The aftermath leaves you equal parts warm and hopeful, and the romance is the level of epic that will leave you spinning.

The Alchemists of Loom by Elisa Kova

The Alchemists of Loom is the first in the Loom Saga, a series that follows Ari, a former engineer-turned-thief, who seeks to defy the Dragons who oppress the people of her kingdom. But a series of events unfold that lead Ari to teaming up with an enemy Dragon – something she never thought possible – to overthrow the one who took everything from Ari: the Dragon King.

How amazing does this sound? Taking down the Dragon King? Teaming up with an enemy? Fighting against oppression? The world isn’t ready for this level of epic.

Shatter the Sky by Rebecca Kim Wells

When Maren’s girlfriend is taken by the Aurati, servants to the evil emperor that conquered Maren’s people, Maren will move heaven and earth to get her back. In this case, that means stealing a dragon from a highly-guarded fortress so she can rain fire down on the Aurati’s capital and take her girlfriend back. But Murphy’s law dictates nothing goes as planned, so Maren runs into a few…complications along the way.

The premise alone is enough to induce shivers. Maren’s sheer determination, rage and need for vengeance made her journey absolutely breath-taking and awe-inducing. For sure, this is a must-not-miss book that everyone should read.

  2. I’ve heard of some of the books in this post, but sadly, the only one I’ve read so far is Priory of The Orange Tree. I loved it, it’s definitely one of my favourite books of the year ♥ Its size is obvious, but I felt like it didn’t feel that long when reading it. The pace is perfect, and there is so much to discover in this universe, it was never boring. I’ll have to look up the other books! 🙂
